ARTIST STATEMENT

I taught metalsmithing and drawing at the University of Alaska Fairbanks for 11 years where I also earned my BFA in ceramics and drawing. My MFA was in Interdisciplinary Studies which included mixed media installations and post modern theory. My work has shown in over 200 exhibitions.

Most of my work has been influenced by the dichotomies and juxtapositions of rural Alaskan living. I’m particularly interested in exploring the intersections between technology and nature, art and craft, destruction and creation. As inspiration, I look for the magical within the mundane, provoke thoughtfulness with the practical and animate the pragmatic with mischievousness. I’ve worked with clay and the ceramic process since 1984. All my work is one of a kind or limited edition, designed, and handmade by me in my small home studio in rural Alaska.
