| As a child, when I worked on homework and papers, I spent more time on the illustrations than on the text. Is it any wonder, that now as an adult I still have the same problem? It probably explains why I am a painter and not a writer, and why I put off doing my "Artist Statement" to the very last moment. However, the more I learn about my craft, the more I realize how similar the processes of writing and painting can be. Webster's New World Dictionary defines "essay" as 1) an attempt or trial and 2) a short literary composition of an analytical or interpretive kind, dealing with its subject usually from a personal point of view or in a limited way. Each of my paintings is an attempt to interpret for the viewer my personal point of view of the subject.
The goal in painting a picture as in writing an essay is to produce a work that has unity: one in which the all parts contribute to a harmonious whole. That is why I decided to call this show "Essays in Paint: Imaginative Observation". I think of each painting as a descriptive, personal essay that is an original and direct way of seeing a limited subject in a focused way. I hope the viewer can study each work and be able to see the world a little bit though my eyes.
