| From early childhood, I have been drawn to the outdoors and fascinated by the beauty and rhythms of the natural world. Alaska has been my home for over 30 years, and its spectacular scenery and wilderness are a steady source of inspiration. In my paintings, I try to capture the beauty of certain places and moments, which are fleeting both in the short term - the light and weather change quickly - and the long term - natural processes and human activities change the landscape forever.
I get out in the backcountry whenever possible, by hiking, skiing, floating a river, or flying to an exotic spot via bush air taxi. The ideal is to work on location, and I've developed lightweight equipment and techniques for use in the field. Sometimes complete paintings can be done on location. If not, I try to get a good start on a painting, or at least make some color sketches. I also take digital photos, which are useful for drawing notes, less so for color.
I find much beauty in the familiar landscape of the Tanana Valley, and often take short road trips in all seasons. In the studio, I draw on my field notes and experiences to create larger works without the distractions of weather, bugs, and bears. I prefer to work in alkyds and oils, because these materials are easily transported, the finished paintings don't require framing under glass, and the results are archival.
