Born in Kotzebue 1955, Gilbert
was the youngest of twelve
children. His father was a
wooden sled builder. Watching
him steam the wood and carve
each piece is a good childhood
memory. The dancing in his
village was always an inspiration
and a tradition that he tries
to remember through his masks.
Gilbert sees each mask in his mind's eye before he begins the
process of creating. Sometimes the driftwood tells him what
to make.
