August: Claire Fejes

ARCTIC FAMILY LIFE

“I did the best drawings of my life sitting on the floor of Otoonah’s house, or standing in the deep snow drawing the Tigara landscape. I still remember the north wind blowing, the dogs howling and the everlasting scent of seal oil, which I grew to love. It was my good fortune to be in the Arctic at that time to experience their culture.”

People of the Noatak, 1994

Claire was invited into the communities and families of the north. The work she considered to be her best, her most true and authentic, was that of Alaska Native family life. She knew these people as her own and so she painted them as they were.
